★About★
Combining the traditional Japanese arts of the Tsugaru Shamisen with the familiar modern sounds of electronic DJ music, Raijin brings you a never-before-seen collaboration on a live stage.
The performance featuring the seemingly contrasting sounds of the East and West was highly regarded by the Japanese audience.
Initially launched to promote various Japanese traditions, such as the Tsugaru Shamisen, to the younger generation, this project has been praised by many artists for its meaning and potential for success.
The first performance of the project took place at Shinjuku, Tokyo in August 2016, promoting itself using the slogan "Feel The Shock". The show featured two professional players of the Tsugaru Shamisen, and attracted huge praise from the capacity crowd. Following the success of the Tokyo show, Raijin crosses the seas and brings its exciting performances to the multi-cultural city of London.
The London show will feature the collaboration between Hibiki Ichikawa, the only professional player of Tsugaru Shamisen in the UK and officially recognised as a world-leading talent of the art as demonstrated by his qualification to perform under the "Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa", and DJ Takaki, a world-class turntablist from Tokyo whose performance for a TV commercial for the 2014 FIFA World Cup has been viewed over a million times on YouTube. With the fierce battle on stage between these two world class performers being the main act of the event, London will be presented with a fresh new outlook of what "Cool Japan" is all about.
The Japanese kanji character selected to showcase the theme of this first show in London is 極, which contains the meaning of “extreme” and “conclusion”. This character represents the two main performers of the night going head-to-head in a live music battle, each of whom have “mastered the arts” of their respective, contrasting genres.
