Interning at Japanese print gallery
Established in 1977, we are one of the longest running and largest galleries in Europe specialised in Japanese woodblock prints. We currently have an internship opportunity for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual and are seeking someone to join our friendly and dedicated team at Japanese Gallery in Angel, London. As part of the team you will have the opportunity to learn knowledge in Japanese art mainly from 19th century to contemporary as well as the way commercial galleries work, developing skills that are vital in the sector.
This is an unpaid opportunity. There is a possibility that a successful candidate receives an offer for a paid position at the end of the internship, although this is not guaranteed.
Key responsibilities:
- Assisting customers from various countries and backgrounds in the gallery
- Answering enquiries from customers via email and phone
- Digitising prints (includes basic tasks using Adobe software)
- Researching newly acquired prints
- Updating the website
- Writing and sending newsletters
- Collecting customer information
- Marketing to find new clients for the gallery
- Organising exhibitions in and outside of the gallery
The above list is not exhaustive and we are looking for someone who highly motivated to learn new skills and develop their knowledge at all times.
Key skills:
- Knowledge of Japanese culture and history
- Enthusiasm to gain new knowledge and skills at all times
- Able to and happy work on a wide range of tasks
- Ability to work effectively both individually and within a team
- Excellent attention to detail
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Some knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel programmes
The following skills and background will be considered an advantage but are not essential:
- Good ability in Japanese language, especially reading as this is useful for researching prints.
- Experience using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
- Background in Art or Japanese cultural studies
