I am an experienced tutor in Latin, Classical Greek and English grammar and literature (with an emphasis on writing well), and have a first-class degree in Modern Languages from Oxford University. I run a small tutoring agency called De Vere Tutors, with all lessons conducted via Skype. Students from around the world can embark on tailored courses, from a week to a year or more, for instruction and inspiration. The goal is to forge a shared passion for the subject between teacher and taught. The classes offer much more than simple instruction for exams or qualifications, though they do that too: they are designed to inspire the student to make the subject his or her own.
Classics—the study of Latin and ancient Greek and the history, literature and culture of ancient Rome and of Athens (especially in the 5th Century B.C.)—is enjoying a renaissance today. The languages themselves, quite apart from their intrinsic beauty, are a tremendous mental discipline and will help the student to understand the structure and grammar of modern European and other languages, as well as enriching his or her vocabulary and syntactical understanding of English. They will also train him or her to think more clearly.
As for today’s global language, English, many can speak it―even fluently―but very few can write it well. Writing clear, accurate and expressive English prose is an indispensable art for those who wish to excel in education or business or any field that requires lucid and detailed communication. It is also the one sure way of enhancing a student’s appreciation of the matchless riches of English literature, from Shakespeare to Tolkein.
